Nokia Brings Back N-Gage Platform In New Handsets

For many years I was convinced we'd seen the last of the N-Gage, then this happened...

Today Nokia has announced the brand is back - but thankfully as part of a software platform rather than a dedicated device.
Incorporated inside Nokia's new Internet services brand ‘Ovi' ('Door' in Finnish - I know because the press release told me), it will give budding mobile gamers the chance to download games onto their handsets for between six and eight euros a pop. Free demos of all games will also be available to provide a try-before-you-buy experience. Nokia hasn't detailed any specific titles for N-Gage as of yet, but expect some golden oldies as well as a raft of newbies.

Further fleshing out Ovi is access to the Nokia Music Store which is scheduled to go live later this year. 192kbps bitrate tracks will be sold in WMA format and can be downloaded either from a compatible handset or direct for a PC. A catalogue of 'millions' is claimed to be available from day one with prices for individual songs set at one euro and albums going for 10 euros.

Finally in an effort to unite its online offerings under a single brand, Nokia has also said its Nokia Maps service will also be pulled under the Ovi brand.
So all sounds very tempting but what about compatible handsets? According to the Finns, the N73, N81, N81 8GB, N93, N93i, N95 and N95 8GB will all work with Ovi when it launches in November. But wait, aren't some of these models new?

Yup, that's right my chums. Nokia has today rolled out the N81, N81 8GB (top) and N95 8GB (above). The former are a pair of sliders with HSDPA, integrated 802.11b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and (get ready to cheer) a 3.5mm headphone jack. The standard N81 has a microSD expansion slot while the latter has 8GB of built in storage but, surprisingly, no expansion slot.

As for the N95 8GB, it - as the name suggests - throws 8GB of storage inside the N95. Not only that however, it also increases the screen size slightly from 2.6 inches to 2.8 inches though the QVGA resolution remains the same as do all other specs.

All three models, like the Ovi service itself, will become available in Q4. Finntastic.

Samsung Televisions – A success story

sumsung Electronics has assumed the lead role in the global TV market, with its revolutionary Televisions being rolled out almost every year have become bestselling products since 2006. Samsung Electronics has held the No. 1 position in the global TV market since 2007, both in terms of volume and value. All this success has been achieved within a short period of 10 years, transforming Samsung Electronics into the hugely successful market leader.Samsung TV’s rise to the top in world’s largest TV market – North America, began in the year 2000, Samsung transformed its operational methodology. At that time, the need to enhance its position was felt, because Samsung was ranked 12th in a study for evaluating the numerous TV-makers in the USA. This study was conducted by a local market research company.
As Samsung became increasingly consumer-focused and proactive, its innovations began to gain popularity at the CES – the world’s largest consumer electronics tradeshow held in the US. The real turning point came in 2005, when Samsung decided to foster new growth in its TV business to become recognized worldwide for quality and value.
The Television market has transformed during the past decade from analog to digital TVs and from brown tube (CRT) TVs to flat panel (LCD and PDP) TVs. Samsung Electronics believed that this was an opportunity to change the market landscape during such a big transition period. For capitalizing on this opportunity, the best resources were reallocated swiftly to the Visual Display unit to focus strategically in important markets.
Samsung moved 300 engineers away from its successful semiconductor business unit, and into the TV business. This was the best performing engineering team in the company. These newly deployed engineers in the TV division were given very healthy performance bonuses every year. This made the TV unit highly productive and competitive.
The newly structured TV business unit set up the technological basis for creating TVs that were differentiated from those of its competitors. Consistent research and innovations have led Samsung into becoming the first company to launch the 3D TV following its Bordeaux TV and LED TV range.
Back then, the competitors were buying standardized semiconductors for TVs from outside manufacturers. Thus, their ability to differentiate their TVs was very limited. Semiconductor companies had their own priorities to create universal semiconductors, rather than making specialized ones for only a few innovative customers. Samsung’s new organizational structure enabled the in-house creation of more specialized and differentiated Semi-conductors for its new breed of TVs.
Samsung was also producing its own LCDs, a core component for digital TV displays. This was a major competitive advantage based on Samsung’s vertical integration. More than 100 TV brands were competing in the North American market and most of them offered similar designs. Samsung elevated its product image with attractive and differentiating designs. The changing preferences of customers were proactively met by Samsung. The new trend was to put more value on TV aesthetics and designs, leading to the popularity of flat panel TVs.
Through these efforts, a sleek new product line, “the Bordeaux TV”, emerged in 2006. From a distance, its silhouette appeared like a wine glass. Its speakers were hidden under the smooth curves of the unit to make the display look wider. Its name was taken from Bordeaux, a famous wine region of the world. The Bordeaux TV broke the stereotype and immediately caught the consumer’s eye at large electronics stores. This technology also offered unmatched picture quality and amazing features.
The Bordeaux TV made a splash with 2.5 million units sold in 2006. Based on the success of the Bordeaux TV, Samsung rolled out another successful product, the ‘Crystal Rose TV’ in 2008, with the design and color impressions of a rose. Samsung TV unit also made extensive investments in buying special equipment and lending it to its suppliers. This bold step brought in a quick profit of almost 174,000 US dollars from the Bordeaux TV. Over 3 million units of the Crystal Rose TV were sold in 2009. After these huge successes, in the second half of 2008, a revolutionary new product, the LED TV was created.
With growing popularity and consumer awareness of Samsung TVs, employee confidence has also kept rising. Most employees consider it to be the most rewarding occupation, full of career growth opportunities.
The TV structure has two parts; the display where images are shown, and the light source at the back of the TV. Samsung focused on the light source and used an LED instead of fluorescent light. The LED enhances picture quality with more brightness and clarity, while using less power. Using LED technology Samsung was also able to dramatically reduce the TV thickness from 10 cm to 3 cm.
The higher manufacturing cost of LED TV makes it inaccessible for mid- and low-cost markets, where too many companies are fighting in a cut throat competition. Thus Samsung faced less competition in the high-end LED markets. As the world began to recover from the global financial crisis in 2009, the LED TV became a hit product. Various competitors responded by hurriedly introducing their own LED TVs, but the consumer had already formed the impression that LED TV is a Samsung brand, thus the Samsung LED TV sales kept rising, as Samsung was the first in the arena, reflecting its leadership in research.
With the success of fantastic 3D movies like Avatar, the 3D home entertainment trend is growing worldwide. This year, Samsung brought its complete focus on technological transformation to become the first developer of 3D TVs and home entertainment solutions. The cutting edge 2.5-D products by Samsung, introduced a revolutionary function that enables converting 2D images to 3D by clicking a button on the remote control. Global competitors bitterly regretted not developing the feature, as they realize that “New is the only way to survive”.
Due to these innovations, the sales figures of Samsung are showing consistent growth. Samsung also adopted a very sophisticated marketing strategy for 3D LED TV. A global launch event for 3D TV was held in New York, attended by James Cameron- the director of 3D film ‘Avatar’, where a popular American singer’s video footage filmed in 3D was also introduced .

Samsung F480 TouchWiz

Samsung TouchWiz package

The Samsung SGH-F480 TouchWiz mobile handset comes in a dark-blue box with various removable segments that fit like a jigsaw puzzle. Besides the TouchWiz itself, you will find the following items in the box: a battery charger, headset, USB cable and a Samsung PC Suite software CD. The manual is available in both English and Dutch. The lid on the back of the phone, with behind it the battery and the SIM card, can be replaced by an included leather cover. When applying it to the cell phone, it fits in perfectly with the Samsung TouchWiz and they look like one device.

Samsung F480 test

Samsung F-480 cell phone design

It is difficult not to fall for the charms of the glossy black design of the Samsung TouchWiz. Thanks to its dimensions of 3.8 x 2 x 0.43 inches the device is thin and handy; features that guarantee a high score in my opinion. The front of the Samsung F480 is characterized by the bright touch screen and three additional buttons. The housing, and in particular the square that serves for listening, is neatly finished with a silver lining. The camera lens and flash are positioned on the back of the Samsung F480 that is covered with a sleek metal casing. Quick buttons have been placed on the side of the device and allow for easy and quick volume adjustment, taking a picture and locking the cell phone. However, seeing as the 'hold' button is positioned in a rather accessible spot at the top, it might lead to accidental unlocking of the device in your pocket.

Samsung SOUL Dynamic Touch Phone

Samsung Soul
Samsung has released a new slider in Europe called Soul, its new flagship slider phone. Serving as the final bow for the Ultra Edition, it blends in a split-screen, context-sensitive touch control system similar to that of the LG Venus: rather than rely on fixed buttons or an entire front touch surface, the Soul includes a small touchscreen area whose buttons change depending on the immediate context for the screen above. When playing music, track controls replace normal commands, Samsung says in an example. The Soul is also the first Samsung handset to sport a themed UI where the entire look and sound can be replaced at once.Samsung Soul

The handset is both very camera- and data-focused. A 5-megapixel camera is accompanied by a high-power LED flash as well as by face detection and image stabilization - all features normally reserved for some of the better dedicated cameras, the company says. Transfers are quick with 3G Internet access over HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps downstream; the phone supports North America with quad-band calling over GSM, though whether it also supports 3G in the Western region is unknown. The phone makes heavy use of Google features and supports built-in Gmail and search functions, including a dedicated button at the top level of the interface.

The 12.8mm (0.5in) thick phone is said to be music-savvy with AAC, FM radio, MP3, and WMA support, including protected WMA music stores. Bang & Olufsen's ICEpower audio enhancement technology is also onboard the Soul, which should be available first in Europe by April but is likely to see service in the US through AT&T if left in its current form.

Soul Specifications:
* Connectivity: quad band GSM/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
* Display: 2.2" 16M color QVGA TFT
* Camera: 5 mpxwith autofocus, 4x digital zoom, face recognition, image stabilizer and WDR optimizer, power LED

Should owners of E71 upgrade to E75

Nokia came out with a great phone with E71. It was a great improvement from its predecessors like E61. However, as is the case with good products the expectations of users were very high with the newer versions of the E series phones.
Nokia launched E75 recently and everyone thought it would be a great improvement but from the reviews it seems it is taking a hit. Techtree which is gadget review website in India has trashed the new E75. Read all about it here.
Nokia E75
However, I’m a little surprised because what improvements could have been made to E71 apart from a few aesthetics. Maybe the camera could have been improved and a little bit of multimedia improvement but that would have cut into the functionality of the other applications because of the limitations of available memory (I mean RAM on the phone). A lot of times I have a tough time to get the phone moving specially when I’m using 3-6 applications at the same time.
I agree that Nokia could have delivered a better phone with E75 but I do not feel that they have completely failed. Also it seems from the reviews that there is no need to upgrade from a E71 to E75 but those who are thinking about buying a new E71 might want to take a look at E75 as an alternate phone – of course they would have to shell out some extra money!

The new app will offer iPhone and iPod Touch users all kinds of gesture-based editing tools–from the basic flip, rotate and crop to more subtle image editing such as tint control and filters and effects. mini3i 2 From China With Love: Dells Android Phone
Dell’s reportedly going to show up a little bit late to the Android party with its Mini 3i, which has already debuted in China. Still, it’s better late than never, especially for a phone that looks kind of like an iPhone, but rounder and slimmer. A tipster tells CrunchGear that the phone feels “cheap and plasticky, like the [Palm] Pre,” but he expects Dell to upgrade the phone for its import to America.

Motorola Milestone 2 and Defy announced

Motorola unveiled the Droid 2 in the US last month, so a Europe/Asia-friendly version has been expected. Well, the day has finally come. Motorola today announced the Milestone 2 in the UK, the GSM/HSDPA version of the Droid 2.
This slider has a form factor similar to the original Milestone with almost identical physical dimensions and weight. However, its QWERTY keypad has been slightly tweaked so there's no directional pad. The camera remains at 5 megapixels but is now capable of 720p HD video capture.

PowerPoint 2010's Presentation Companion

One of the cool new features in Office Mobile 2010 is the Presentation Companion for PowerPoint. To get this to work, first you need a Windows Mobile 6.5 device with the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Then you can download and install the beta of Office Mobile 2010 from the Windows Mobile Marketplace. You also need a desktop/laptop computer with Bluetooth that also has PowerPoint 2007/2010 installed. Then you need to install the Presentation Companion plug-in for PowerPoint on the desktop.

After you get all that done, you need to have the same PPT file on both your PC and your Windows Phone... both opened in PowerPoint. Next go to the Add-ins tab in PowerPoint on your desktop and "Start" the Presentation Companion. Then on the Windows Phone, choose Menu>Presentation Companion and follow the instructions for connecting to your desktop installation of PowerPoint via Bluetooth.

After all of that is done, you'll be able to see your PowerPoint notes on your Windows Phone, while being able to control the slide presentation on the desktop via Bluetooth.

There are 2 "Gotchas" to be aware of.
1. The Presentation Companion beta software does not work on 64bit versions of PowerPoint.
2. The mobile side of the Presentation Companion does not work with non-standard Bluetooth software implementations on Windows Phones such as the HTC Touch Pro2 or HD2.
